The Fellowship will be working with the AI Security Institute, exploring how researchers and policymakers understand and build the science of AI safety. Prof. Stilgoe has interests in public attitudes to new technologies and has been helping government to understand public hopes and fears about AI.
The overall goal of the research, across a broad range of topics, is to equip the government with an empirical understanding of the safety of advanced AI systems and their impacts on people and society.
The Fellow working with AISI will conduct research on topics such as:
- Monitoring the fast-moving landscape of AI development
- Evaluating the risks AI poses to national security and public welfare
- Advancing the field of systemic safety to improve societal resilience
Dr Jack Stilgoe is a professor in science and technology studies at University College London, where he researches the governance of emerging technologies. He is part of the UKRI Responsible AI leadership team and was principal investigator of the ESRC Driverless Futures project (2019-2022) where he worked with EPSRC and ESRC to develop a framework for responsible innovation that is now being used by the Research Councils. Among other publications, Dr Stilgoe is the author of ‘Who’s Driving Innovation?’ (2020, Palgrave) and ‘Experiment Earth: Responsible innovation in geoengineering’ (2015, Routledge). He previously worked in science and technology policy at the Royal Society and the think tank Demos.
